My mother is concerned that her children will have to pay an estate tax if she leaves her house to her children, and I believe there is none if its under a certain amount. Also no inheritance tax because we are her children. I think we would just have to pay any taxes due on her house at that time, as her house is paid for. This is New Jersey

In Calvert County Maryland they just retroactively raised real estate taxes for the years 2006, 07, and 08. The notice of these additional taxes due were just sent out….and they are charging interest and penalties. How can they charge interest and penalties when they just raised those taxes and the amount just became due? I’m completely mystified.

My inheritance was in the form of Jt Ten on mutual funds with my mother. she died and the mutual funds have remained uncashed for 5 years. Am I delinquent on estate tax or do I owe when I cash out the mutual funds. How do you find a good lawyer for these things!! The IRS site is sooo complicated
Thanks

Say that I create a trust of $1,000,000 exempt from the Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax for my grandchildren. In the situation where I die and all my lineal descendents die before the trust terminates, my will states that the trust goes to my sister and her descendents. If that happens, is the trust still exempt from the GST tax? If not, what are the tax ramefications?
