for 2010 —-retroactively. This could occur after the elections in November or in 2011. Are there instances of federal tax law being changed this late in the game? 2010 is the best year to die if you have a large estate because there are no estate taxes but there were last year and there will be next year…

Let’s say that a poor man is one of the 1 in 300,000,000 who starts out from a truly modest background, and somehow, against all the rules of the universe and common sense, makes a billion dollars.
Should his estate be taxed just so that the stupid government can make an extra 1$ trillion in 10 years, because people in the 0.5% tax bracket control 23 cents of every dollar earned in the United States?
Actually, I’m insane for saying that rich people become rich by clipping coupons and taking the subway instead of a private town car everywhere, but that’s the point. I eat crayons, too.
What do you think?

Is there a liberal, or other supporter, of this tax out there that can explain this to me? I understand what the tax is-and how much it was a few years ago. What I want to know is why people would support such a tax. I actually some female commentator on MSNBC last night complain that Obama gave the estate tax to the repubs as part of the recent tax deal. Why would she be complaining about that?
So from what I’ve read so far those who support this tax think that people who work their whole lives for a little money or other resources to pass on to their loved ones should give it up to the govt. to help those who don’t know the deceased or the deceased doesn’t know?
So we work hard then give away a portion of our earnings at death not to our loved ones, but to the govt. b/c the govt. knows how to best use what we’ve earned?
So we get taxed on what we earn during life, then we get taxed on what we have left over after death?

Which political party protects people from the above for estates valued at less then 750,000 and capital gains at less then 500,000 for a couple. Are we better with the policies in place now or if the Dem’s get in?
It seems Obama and Hillary are sidestepping this when they talk about not taxing the middle class..

CTJ’s recent figures on the estate tax show that it affected less than one percent of estates during 2005 and 2006. And those estates were subject to an exemption of $1.5 million per spouse. Now the exemption is $2 million and in 2009 it will be $3.5 million.
Why do they call it the “Death Tax”?
Is it because everyone dies, but only rich people have Estates and they want to make average Americans fear paying it? Don’t we deserve better from out politicians than misleading names and misinformation such as this?
Just WHO are the Republicans looking out for anyway? Clearly, it’s not people like you and me.
Your Thoughts?
Look at those exemption levels! They’re not being cheated, they’re cheating their way out of paying what they didn’t earn in the first place.
Bubbles, the evidence put forth by the Republican agenda shows that they heavily favor the wealthy in this country. Look at Bush’s tax cuts that went disproportionately to the RICHEST 1% of ALL Americans. Coincidence? Not at all.
