estate tax
chitownlifer asked:

I was divorced in Oct 2009 and need to know what options I have for filing status. My ex has nothing to write off. I have mortgage interest and real estate taxes to write off. We both worked full time jobs last year. Should I file married or single and file a seperate return or should I file married and file a joint return?
I have 1 child from a prior marriage whom lives with me.

  • Bostonian In MO:

An exspouse if you can file joint return with an exspouse if.
An exspouse if you cannot file joint return with an exspouse if you paid more than half of household thats your only normal filing option single.
An exspouse if you cannot file as your only other possible option single you cannot file as your only other possible option single you can claim as your child that is your marital status on dec 31st.

You’re no longer married, so you cannot file as married under any circumstances. Single, or possibly Head of Household (if your child lives with you or you are supporting an elderly parent for example) are your only choices.
